Another amazing minimal renovation, this time a smoke sauna in Soini, Finland by one of my favorite young practices, Lassila Hirvilammi.

The original structure is an old 19th century smoke sauna, which was converted to a granary in the 1940’s. The new renovation restores the building’s original function while delicately repairing and lightly adding to the historic shack. A new outdoor bath and covered porch was added to cool down from heat inside.

The addition, made with untreated spruce, will gray overtime, integrating seamlessly into the original structure.

The humble interior is given a new roof and floor made of the same material. The sinuous curve of of the ceiling will darken with soot from the smoke after each use, imprinting a dark patchwork that covers the space. There is no electricity, and the only light provided is through a small window slightly obscured with loose wood planks.

An integral part of Finish culture, the renovation maintains the dignity of the original building and respectfully adjusts it for contemporary use. A place for quiet contemplation, the minimal detailing and unobtrusive additions allow one to be alone with thier thoughts.
