marte.marte with Martin Rauch - Funerary chapel, Batschuns 2001. The small chapel is located within a new ramped, outdoor area in order to create a respectful distance form the existing graveyard. While monumental in its geometry, Rauche’s rammed-earth construction of the chapel walls creates a texture through its porosity and striations that help to diminish its rigidity. Inside, a small slit of light punctuates the ceiling edge and floor connection, reducing the visual weight of the exterior and creating dramatic lighting conditions throughout the day.
